About this Species

Papilio anchisiades, the Ruby-spotted Swallowtail, is a captivating species known for its high-contrast color palette. It is a common yet highly prized species among collectors due to its elegant shape and vibrant magenta markings.

While the forewings are primarily solid black, the hindwings feature a series of intense ruby-pink spots arranged in a crescent pattern. These spots are believed to mimic toxic butterflies of the genus Parides, providing a defensive advantage through mimicry.

The larvae feed on citrus plants, where they often gather in small groups for protection. Our specimens from Peru are legally obtained from ethical farming projects that support local livelihoods.

Habitat

Deep jungle and tropical rainforests, particularly common in Loreto, San Martín, and Junín in Peru.

Sustainability First

At Kukusa, we only deal with specimens from sustainable butterfly farms in Peru. Each purchase supports local conservation efforts and rural livelihoods.
