About this Species

Papilio androgeus, commonly known as the Androgeus Swallowtail, is a large and striking butterfly found throughout the tropical regions of the Americas, with significant populations in the Peruvian Amazon.

This species is highly sexually dimorphic. The males possess large, velvety black wings with bold, diagonal sun-yellow bands that shimmer in the sunlight. The females are typically darker, often mimicking other toxic species to avoid predation. Their elongated tails are a signature of the Papilionidae family.

Like many swallowtails, Papilio androgeus is an agile flier often found in clearings and forest edges. At Kukusa, our specimens are ethically collected from sustainable farms, promoting conservation of their natural habitats.

Humid tropical forests and clearings, from sea level up to 1,200 meters. Common in the Loreto and San Martín regions of Peru.
