About this Species
Papilio torquatus, the Torquatus Swallowtail, belongs to the diverse and beautiful Papilionidae family. Its distribution covers tropical forests throughout Central and South America, with notable subspecies in the Peruvian jungle.
The males feature a bold sulfur-yellow diagonal band across their black wings, while females exhibit multiple mimetic forms that resemble unpalatable butterflies from the genus Parides. This strategy, known as Batesian mimicry, helps them evade predators in the dense canopies.
At Kukusa, our Papilio torquatus specimens are preserved with extreme care to maintain their natural luster. All our butterflies are sourced legally and sustainably from local Peruvian communities.
Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowland forests. Found frequently in the department of Madre de Dios and Ucayali, Peru.
