About this Species

Papilio bachus, the Bacchus Swallowtail, is a large butterfly from the swallowtail family native to the tropical and cloud forests of South America, with prominent subspecies in the Peruvian departments of Junín and Pasco.

This species is unmistakable due to its large size and bold, deep orange or sulfur-yellow diagonal bands on a velvety black ground. It is often found in the higher regions of the jungle (selva alta), frequently mud-puddling on the banks of Andean rivers. Due to its impressive wingspan and high-contrast markings, it is a highly prized specimen for science and aesthetics.

Kukusa ensures each Bacchus Swallowtail is prepared and handled with the highest standards of the industry, preserving its natural glory.

Habitat

High jungle (selva alta) and cloud forests, ranging from 600 to 1,500 meters. Common in Chanchamayo and Satipo, Peru.

Sustainability First

At Kukusa, we only deal with specimens from sustainable butterfly farms in Peru. Each purchase supports local conservation efforts and rural livelihoods.
