Orange-barred Sulphur
Phoebis philea
A living sunbeam — the Orange-barred Sulphur electrifies Peru's highland meadows with its luminous golden-yellow wings and vivid orange bar markings.
About this Species
The Orange-barred Sulphur (Phoebis philea) is one of the most radiantly beautiful butterflies in Peru's highland and cloud-forest transition zones. Belonging to the family Pieridae, this species never fails to elicit wonder from even the most experienced lepidopterists, with wings that seem to radiate golden light from within.
The male displays a vivid lemon-yellow upper surface with a bold, broad orange bar across the fore-wing — a marking as precise and striking as a brushstroke of flame on polished gold leaf. The female, while displaying more subdued hues with orange-edged scaling, is equally elegant. Both sexes share the characteristic creamy yellow underside, finely dusted with small reddish-brown spots.
Phoebis philea is primarily found in open areas, forest margins, and highland meadows between 1,000 and 2,400 meters elevation — the transitional zone between Peru's lowland Amazon and the high Andes. Here, it feeds on a variety of leguminous flower species and is particularly attracted to Cassia and Senna plants, which also serve as the larval host.
The species is notable for its migratory behavior: seasonal populations undertake significant mass movements along Andean valleys, creating spectacular natural displays as thousands of these golden butterflies follow the same flyways. This migratory tendency has inspired local Peruvian communities to view Phoebis philea as a herald of seasonal change and prosperity.
Our Phoebis philea specimens are collected in full compliance with Peruvian environmental regulations, supporting local artisan communities in the highland departments of Cajamarca, Junín, and Cusco.
